Plot
Inspired by the heart-warming true story of Fisherman's Friends, an a-capella group based in the Cornwall town of Port Isaac whose album of sea shanty covers was a surprise hit in 2010, making it to the top 10 and selling 150,000 copies of the record.
Danny (Daniel Mays, 'Good Omens') is a cynical London music producer who goes down to the coast for a stag do with his city friends. His mates play a prank on him that leads to Danny signing the local group of ten sea shanty singers made up of a group of local fishermen, builders, shopkeepers, engineers and other tradesmen which include Jim (James Purefoy, 'Rome'), Leadville (Dave Johns, 'The Keeper') and Jago (David Hayman, 'Taboo'). Though it begins as a joke, something about the music touches the lonely Danny's soul and he decides that he will put every ounce of effort he has into bringing the music of the Fisherman's Friends to a global audience.
Directed by Chris Foggin ('Kids in Love') and written by Piers Ashworth, Meg Leonard and Nick Moorcroft, 'Fisherman's Friends' is a semi-biographical story that is equal parts comedy, drama and musical that tells the story of a very unexpected success. Joining the cast are Meadow Nobrega, Maggie Steed, Tuppence Middleton and Sam Swainsbury.
