Plot

'Fire Island' is an American romantic comedy with an LGBTQ theme directed by Andrew Ahn. It is written and starred by comedian Joel Kim Booster. Inspired by the plot of "Pride and Prejudice," the film features a predominantly gay and Asian cast. Produced by Searchlight, it premiered on the Hulu platform in June 2022 in the United States and globally through Disney+/Star.

The movie tells the story of Noah (Booster), who each summer invites his friends Howie, Luke, Keegan, and Max to a vacation on 'Fire Island', an island in the Hamptons known for its gay neighborhoods and gay-themed summer parties. On the island, they stay at the home of Erin, the "mother" of the house and group.

At their first party, the group meets a trio of snobs, Charlie, Will, and Cooper. Howie is attracted to Charlie, who invites the group to a party at his mansion, while Noah tries to get Howie hooked up with someone during the vacation. The love triangles are completed with Dex, an adult content creator disliked by Will.

In the film, which addresses class and race relations from an LGBTQ perspective, each character has their equivalent in the world of "Pride and Prejudice". In addition to Booster, the film features Bowen Yang, Conrad Ricamora, James Scully, Matt Rogers, Nick Adams, and Zane Phillips, all openly gay actors. Margaret Cho portrays Erin.

Trivia

The movie that changed the Bechdel test

One of the popular tests on the internet is the "Bechdel test," which demonstrates whether a movie includes female characters effectively. This test asserts that any movie must have at least two female characters who talk to each other about something other than a man. The truth is, 'Fire Island' does not pass the test, although Alison Bechdel herself assured that being about gays, it would pass her test without any problems.

With a little message for Quibi

When Erin's character (Margaret Cho) talks about her financial troubles, she says, "You know me, I've never been good with money. I was an early investor in Quibi!" As we mentioned, the movie was initially going to be a series for this failed platform.

Was going to be a Quibi series

The project was initially developed for the Quibi platform, which was set to offer short-form series for mobile consumption. It was called 'Trip' and Joel Kim Booster and Bowen Yang were part of the project. After the abrupt shutdown of Quibi, it was transformed into the movie that it ultimately became.
