Plot
'Fiddler: Miracle of Miracles' is a documentary examining the history of the iconic 1964 Broadway musical phenomenon, 'Fiddler on the Roof', which centres on a Russian Jewish milkman trying to marry off his five daughters before an imminent pogrom.
In 'Fiddler: Miracle of Miracles', the history of the show is combined with interviews with the creators of the musical - the composer Jerry Bock, the lyricist Sheldon Harnick and the playwright Joseph Stein - as well as contemporary stars of the Broadway scene including Stephen Sondheim, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Alisa Solomon and Fran Lebowitz. Broadway stars of past and present praise the iconic musical which, despite a poor early reception, went on to receive critical acclaim and a 1971 Oscar-winning film adaptation directed by Norman Jewisan.
The documentary reflects on how the political turmoil of the 1960s - the rise of the feminist movements, increasing conversations surrounding religion and sexuality, the anti-communist feeling - turned the musical into a subtly political take on identity that, despite its focus on Jewish culture and history, has resonated with people and communities across the world.
'Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles' is directed by Max Lewkowicz and was written by Lewkowicz alongside Valerie Thomas.
