Plot
'Ennio: The Maestro' is a documentary movie about the genius Ennio Morricone, author of more than 500 film soundtracks and winner of two Oscars. The film shows a compilation of interviews and statements with big names in film and music industries such as Hans Zimmer, Quentin Tarantino, Clint Eastwood, Bruce Springsteen, Dario Argento, Oliver Stone, Wong Kar-Wai, John Williams, Quincy Jones or the Taviani brothers. The film also combines these interviews with archive images, fragments of some of the author's works or fictional scenes.
The film portrays the great musician and composer as a complicated character. It's not only a compilation in the form of a tribute to Ennio Morricone. It also tells us his experiences, his influences, his inspirations and other details about his private life. For example, his passion for chess (which certainly influeced some of his works) or how he came up with the soundtrack for 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'.
This documentary was directed and written by Giuseppe Tornatore, who worked with Ennio Morricone on the 1988 classic 'Cinema Paradiso'. Tornatore himself talks about the composer in the film. The director is also known for other works such as 'Deception', 'The Legend of 1900' or 'The Unknown Woman'.
