Eighteam

After co-directing the thriller '30 Days Earlier' with Argentine director Nicolás Yacumo, Juan Rodríguez-Briso from Valladolid switched to documentary with 'Eighteam', produced by OmniCorp Estudio and which was originally seen in Zambia in 2014 in cinemas and arrived in Spain at late 2020, streaming directly on the Rakuten TV platform. Film tells how the Zambian football team, at height of its glory, suffered a terrible tragedy in 1993. On April 27, 1993, a Havilland Canada DHC-5 Buffalo aircraft belonging to the Zambian Air Force , was in charge of transporting the Zambian team, which was going to play a match against Senegal in Dakar for African qualifiers for the 1994 Soccer World Cup, held in the United States. The plane never arrived, as it suffered an accident in which its 30 passengers died, among whom were 18 soccer players.

The plane was scheduled to make three stops to refuel; in Brazzaville (Congo); then in Libreville (Gabon) and a final in Abidjan (Ivory Coast). However, The flight never reached the third stop. The official investigation concluded that pilot turned off wrong engine after a fire; in addition to discovering that pilot had shown signs of fatigue and there was an instrument error that was key to the accident taking place.

'Eighteam' tells the resurrection of team after the tragedy, how it took them 18 years to recover and how it was in Gabon, country where the accident took place, where Zambia was proclaimed African soccer champion for the first time, after a long penalty shootout, in which they won in the penalty shootout by 8:7 after having tied 0:0 and 18 penalties against Ivory Coast, a victory against the odds that returned that lost glory to country.
