Plot
When her boyfriend dies from an overdose, Yolanda decides to run away out of fear of the police. She abandons her life as a singer in a trashy bar and hides in the nunnery of the Humiliated Redeemers, ruled by some unusual nuns who dedicate their lives to rescuing women from the streets and who adopt names of contempt. Yolanda will meet the most extravagant characters. Due to the economic problems that the convent faces because of its dark past of murder and prostitution, each nun tries to find a way to escape: the abbess is a heroin addict; sister Lost is raising a tiger in the cloisters; sister Rat in the Alley writes novels under a pseudonym; sister Manure has divine visions due to the LSD effects of her pastries; and sister Viper designs some strange clothing for the images of the Saints in the convent. With the arrival of Yolanda, all these women will unite in order to convince the patron of the convent not to abandon them through a musical extravaganza in the abbess's birthday.

Trivia
Almodóvar has since distanced himself from the film as he felt that he had to bow to commercial considerations.
Alicia Hermida was offered the role of Sor Rata de Callejón, but her schedule didn't allowed her to do it. When Pedro Almodóvar knew this, he gave the part to Chus Lampreave, who previously had a smaller role.
Pedro Almodóvar's first film to have a proper producer and be made for a proper film company, rather than be made on the hoof like his previous projects.
