Plot
1980. In the streets of Flatbush, Brooklyn, someone guns down a teenager. The police, blinded by their search of a guilty person, force a kid that witnessed the murder to identify one of the suspects. The result is Colin Warner (Lakeith Stanfield), an 18-year-old kid from the near Crown Heights, being wrongfully accused and convicted of murder with a sentence of life prison. In the meantime, his childhood and long time friend Carl 'KC' King (Nnamdi Asomugha) will dedicate his life to fight for Colin's freedom and get him out of jail, working on appeals, trials and with lawyers in order to learn how the court system works from the inside.
The film is based on a true story and adapted from the piece 'This American Life', under the direction of Matt Ruskin.

Trivia
More real than it looks
The parole hearing scene was adapted almost completely from the transcripts of Colin's real parole hearing.
Meeting the alter ego
Actor Lakeith Stanfield met the real Colin Warner on multiple occasions to help him prepare for the role. Nnamdi Asomugha also met the real Carl King on a few occasions to help him understand the character. Asomugha stated that it was difficult for King to think back on these events mainly because they took place so long ago.
New York prisons
Shooting the scenes in the prison proved to be a challenge for the production team. Only a few prisons in the New York area allow filming and are often very restrictive with their hours. Some scenes were shot in an active jail in Queens, while others took place in a decommissioned prison on Staten Island.
