Stallone as a director
'Creed', the first entry on this new saga, was directed by filmmaker Ryan Coogle ('Fruitvale Station') who won't come back for this movie. On his place, Sylvester Stallone was in talks to sit behind the camera, but he gave the opportunity to Steven Caple Jr. (being 'Creed II' his first big-budget feature film).
Ryan Coogler
Even though he didn't direct this film, Ryan Coogler, the filmmaker behind 'Creed', has stayed attached to this franchise as an executive producer. Coogler had to pass on the project in order to direct Marvel's 'Black Panther'.
"Russian" antagonists
Just like in 'Rocky IV', none of the antagonists is really played by a Russian actor, Dolph Lundgren (Ivan Drago) is Swedish and Florian Munteanu (Viktor Drago) is Romanian-German.
