Plot
'Cop Land' is an American criminal drama written and directed by James Mangold. The film features an ensemble cast which includes Sylvester Stallone, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta and Robert De Niro.
The film is set in the city of Garrison, New Jersey, where due to a legal loophole live several members of the New York Police, all of them led by lieutenant Ray Donlan. The sheriff of the city is Freddy Heflin, who idealices NYPD and has allowed under his watch the formation of a group of corrupt agents who feel untouchable by Internal Affairs.
One night, Donlan's nephew, Officer Murray Babitch, is sideswiped by two African-American teens on his car. When he believes he is being shot, he ends up firing his gun and killing the two black teens. Then Donlan and Rucker appear in the crime scene and try to plan a gun in the teens car, when they are caught by a paramedic. Under the circumstances, Donlan suggests Babitch to simulate his own suicide while he prepares him a new identity.
Babitch lives hiden in his uncle's house, until Donlan is finally aware that the case won't be close until there is a body, and he plans to drown his own nephew. Warned by his aunt Rose, Babitch escapes the house. Then, Donlan provokes the death of another agent, Joey Randone, because he slept with his wife. When Helfin realices the true extent of the corruption in his city, the two groups start a confrontation that won't end up well.
'Cop Land' was a moderated success in the box office and achieved a good critics score. Stallone, who had tried to enter into the comedy world with his last projects, finally found the tone of his characters with this film.

For the role, Sylvester Stallone had to gain 18 kilos (40 pounds), and he did it by leading a diet based in pancakes from a local restaurant.
A town not so made up
The city of Garrison doesn't exists in real life, but the film is based of the birth city of the director, Washingtonville, in the State of New York, where a lot of NYPD cops used to reside. The shooting of the film, however, took places in the cities of Fort Lee and Edgewater.
