Plot
Andy (Gabriel Bateman, 'Lights Out'), a boy teetering on the edge of the teenage years, struggles to make friends in his new neighbourhood. His mother, Karen (Aubrey Plaza, 'Ingrid Goes West'), sees this and decides to buy him a Buddi doll, a high-tech toy designed to adapt to their surroundings and become life-long friends with their owners, for his birthday. Andy is not particularly enthused by the present at first and is confused when the doll seems to have a glitch and insists on being called Chucky (voiced by Mark Hamill, 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi'). Before long, however, Andy finds himself entertained by Chucky's quirks and ability to make Andy new friends by making other kids laugh, which leads to Chucky steadily becoming obsessed with his new owner. As Chucky and Andy watch horror films together, Chucky picks up on violent tactics that he employs as a means of "protecting" Andy from the world around him. As Andy makes more friends, however, and Chucky grows steadily more jealous of his diverted tension, the AI doll gives in to its sinister impulses and Chucky's new reign of terror begins.
'Child's Play' is directed by Lars Klevberg ('Polaroid', 'The Wall', 'Happy Tree Friends: The Movie') and is written by Tyler Burton Smith ('Mimespeak'), based on the characters by Don Mancini ('Bride of Chucky').

Trivia
Sign to the producer company
At one point a toy police car is activated and states "dead or alive, you're coming with me." This is an obvious reference to 'Robocop', which was also released by Orion Pictures.
First time and inspiration as a mother
Actress Aubrey Plaza's first role as a mother. She stated at Wondercon 2019 that she could relate personally to the character of a young mother, since she herself had a young mother growing up. Her character's age difference with her son in the film is similar to her age difference with her own actual mother.
Disinterested Don Mancini
Don Mancini (the creator of the characters and series) is not involved in this film, and has, along with Jennifer Tilly, Alex Vincent, and Christine Elise, expressed his disinterest in it.
