Plot
'Chaplin: The Spirit of the Tramp' is the name given to the documentary made by the granddaughter of the actor, director and producer. Daughter of one of the interpreter's eight children, Michael, Carmen Chaplin directs this project and writes it together with Ashim Bhalla and Isaaki Lacuesta to make a perfect description of Charles.
To do this, she uses statements from the entire family (which has dedicated their lives to entertainment and art), home videos, unpublished documents and other types of materials that will emphasize one of the least researched aspects of Chaplin's life: his Romani heritage. That is why various well-known Romanian artists also make an appearance in the documentary.
Born in London in 1889, Chaplin would introduce his iconic character, Charlot, when he was barely twenty years old. Works like 'Modern Times' exemplified social criticism intermixed with the satire and comedy that would make the actor so iconic. However, his first talked film was 'The Great Dictator', where he fearlessly parodies the Nazism of the time.
During World War II, Chaplin openly supported the Soviet Union, which would make him new enemies. This causes him, tired of the United States, to settle in Europe to live a quieter life. He would not return to the U.S. until 1972 to receive an Honorary Oscar. The interpreter would die five years later because of natural causes. However, his legacy will be eternal, and 'Chaplin: The Spirit of the Tramp' is a proof of it.
