Plot
In 'Causeway', a drama directed by Lila Neugebauer, Jennifer Lawrence ('Silver Linings Playbook') plays Lynsey, a military engineer who has returned to the United States from Afghanistan with a brain injury caused by an explosion. Recovery is slow and painful and she has to learn to walk again and train her memory, helped by a sweet and talkative caregiver (Jayne Houdyshell). Back home in New Orleans, Lynsey has to face memories even more painful than her military service: a true reckoning with her childhood. At home with her mother (Linda Emond), with whom she has a strained relationship, all Lynsey wants to do is get back to her job as an engineer. Her doctor (Stephen McKinley Henderson) prefers to be cautious, so in the meantime, she gets a job cleaning swimming pools. When her car breaks down, she meets James Aucoin (Brian Tyree Henry), who works at the repair shop, and offers to give her a ride home. Little by little they begin to count on each other for company and comfort. James is also repressing his own trauma from the past. The budding friendship of these two damaged souls shapes Neugebauer's debut, a quiet but painful story about making peace with the past and moving on. 'Causeway' is written by Ottessa Moshfegh, Luke Goebel and Elizabeth Sanders. The film is produced by Lawrence herself and Justine Ciarrocchi. Neugebauer, Jacob Jaffke, Sophia Lin, Patricia Clarkson, Kirk Michael Fellows, and Christopher J. Surgent serve as executive producers. 'Causeway' premiered exclusively on Apple TV+ in November 2022, receiving favorable reviews, especially for its two main leads.
