Plot
'Cassandro' tells the story of Saúl Armendáriz, an openly gay luchador from El Paso who rose to global fame after creating the character of Cassandro 'El Exótico', his alter ego on the ring. Called 'El Liberace de la Lucha Libre', he drastically turned around the traditionally male dominated world of wrestling, and also his own life.
The film is based on the real story of Armendáriz, who started his career in wrestling as Mister Romano in 1999, influenced by icons like El Santo and Rey Misterio Sr. He became famous in the wrestling 'exotic' matches, that have fighters dressed as women and feminized in a humorous tone clearly homophobic. Cassandro, openly homosexual, took power in this jokes and gave a new meaning to this kind of expectacles.
Starring in the film is Gael García Bernal, Mexican actor who's worked in other movies such as 'And Your Mother Too' and 'Time' and in the TV show 'Mozart in the Jungle'. With him we find in the cast Roberta Colindrez, Joaquín Cosío, Raúl Castillo, Perla de la Rosa and Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, known as Bad Bunny.
Directing the movie is the Oscar winner Roger Ross Williams, who also writes it with David Teague and Julián Herbert. Produced by Gerardo Gatica, Todd Black, David Bloomfield, Ted Hope and Julie Goldman, and distributed by Amazon Prime Video.
