Caged Birds

True and moving story about two nonconformists: an idealistic lawyer and an ambivalent and unpredictable criminal, in a struggle for social and personal freedom in the context of the Swiss state repression in the 1980s. Based on real events, it narrates the relationship between Walter Stürm, the most notorious criminal in Switzerland, called the ?king of the escapes?, and the young lawyer Barbara Hug.

Walter Stürm, charismatic and charming, poking fun at the establishment with his scandalous robberies and continuous prison escapes, with an anarchic sense of humor became a media star and an icon of the Swiss counterculture at the time, a symbol of the intransigent current of the extreme left. Barbara Hug, an idealistic lawyer who fought against the outdated and inhumane Swiss prison system in the 1980s.

When Stürm and Hug meet, she sees an opportunity to use Walter's popularity for her goals of reforming the Swiss penal system. Having Walter's collaboration will be her priority, but the less hers yields to her reasoning, the more she falls in love with the fascination of her unwavering desire for freedom. These two complex characters, motivated by very different causes, are driven by the same desire: freedom, although it does not have the same meaning for both. Between them will be born a radical association of interests in conflict between state repression and personal freedom.
