Boyz N the Hood

After quarreling with a child in school, 10 year old Tre Styles, is sent by his mother to live with his father Furious, where he will learn some valuable life lessons in the dangerous neighborhood of Crenshaw, South Central Los Angeles. There he meets friends Darrin "Doughboy" Baker, Ricky and Chris. Between the 4 of them they will come to forge a strong friendship. One day, the four friends are attacked by gang members, and are forced to defend themselves. After they begin to steal things and as a result two of them are arrested. 7 years later, they leave the correctional, but life in the neighborhood has not changed. The first film from director John Singleton, who was nominated for an Oscar for it at the age of 24, becoming the youngest director ever to be nominated for an academy award.
