Plot
In her feature film debut, Georgia Oakley writes and directs this 1988 British drama, which tells the story of Jean, a gay teacher whose life is turned upside down when a new student threatens to reveal her secret.
Set in Great Britain in 1988, 'Blue Jean' tells the story of the members of the collective oppressed by the society of the time and Section 28 promoted by the government of Margaret Thatcher, "the iron lady", who abolished what she was termed as "promotion of homosexuality". If the teacher's secret were to come to light, her working life could be devastated in a matter of seconds and with it her personal stability.
Although Jean wants to keep her sexual orientation a secret at all costs, her girlfriend Viv is proud to be so and to announce it, something that increases tensions between them and fuels Jean's internal conflict.
The cast consists of Rosy McEwen, Kerrie Hayes, Lydia Page, Lucy Halliday, Stacy Abalogun, Deka Walmsley, Gavin Kitchen, Farrah Cave, Amy Booth-Steel, Lainey Shaw, Aoife Kennan, and Scott Turnbull. 'Blue Jean' was nominated at the 2022 BAFTAs for Best Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer and garnered four nominations at the 2022 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA), including Best Lead Performance for McEwen.
