Plot
'BlackBerry' is a Canadian dramatic comedy written and directed by Matt Johnson. It is loosely inspired by the book by Jacquie McNish and Sean Silcoff "Losing the Signal: The Untold Story Behind the Extraordinary Rise and Spectacular Fall of BlackBerry". It is the most nominated film in the history of the Canadian Screen Awards, although it was only released in theaters in Canada. The film was subsequently turned into a three-episode miniseries with additional material, which aired on the CBC network. Both the series and the film have been distributed internationally through streaming platforms.
The film narrates the birth, peak, and destruction of the BlackBerry smartphone in a small Canadian company, RIM, starting in 1996. The movie focuses mainly on the relationships between three people: the phone's inventor and company CEO Mike Lazaridis, his best friend and number two Doug Fregin, and the entrepreneur and savior of the company Jim Balsillie.
'BlackBerry' does not intend to be a biographical work and therefore much of its plots are fictional, although it retains characters and events that actually existed.
The film stars Jay Baruchel as Lazaridis, Glenn Howerton as Balsillie, and the director and screenwriter Matt Johnson as Doug Fregin. The movie was filmed in various cities of the Canadian province of Ontario, as well as in Silicon Valley.
