Plot
'Benediction' takes a journey through the life of the famous poet Siegfried Sassoon. Sassoon was a complex man who survived the horrors of fighting in World War I and was decorated for his bravery, but became a critical voice against the government's direction in the war when he returned from his military service. He became famous for his poetry, taking his inspiration from his experience in the War. He was revered by members of the aristocracy and influential figures of the time and had affairs with a few men while trying to come to terms with his homosexuality. At the same time, devastated by the horrors of war, he dedicated his life to achieving salvation and tried to find it in the conformity of marriage and religion.
The film was directed and written by Terence Davies ('A Quiet Passion'), with cinematography by Nicola Daley and editing by Alex Mackie. The film also features music by Ed Bailie and Abi Leland. The cast includes Jack Lowden, Simon Russell Beale, Peter Capaldi, Jeremy Irvine and Kate Phillips.
Benediction' won Best Screenplay at the San Sebastian International Film Festival and was nominated for Best Screenplay and Best Costume Design at the British Independent Film Awards, as well as winning the Special Presentations section at the Toronto International Film Festival.
