The butterflies

None of the butterflies that appear in the beginning of the film have antennae. After a boy draws antennae on one of Cody's drawings of a butterfly at school, the butterflies in the film have antennae. This shows how Cody's dreams are easily influenced by others.

'Somnia'

The film was originally titled 'Somnia', which would have turned it into the third Mike Flanagan's film with a Latin word title along with 'Absentia' and 'Oculus'.

"It's not a horror movie!"

The film's director, Mike Flanagan, has said several times that 'Before I awake' is no horror film; thus he refers to it as a "fable" or a "supernatural drama."

Latin names

Originally titled "Somnia," which would have made it the third film by Mike Flanagan featuring a single Latin word for a title after Absentia (2011) and Oculus (2013).

Darkness for a while
