'Bacurau' trivia and fun facts
Small village
Bacurau is a fictional place. It was actually shot in the small village of Barra, near the city of Parelhas, in Rio Grande do Norte, a community with 80 inhabitants. Most of who worked in the production, as extras and as part of the crew. A year after filming wrapped, the filmmakers held a special screening of the film there and almost three thousand people showed up.
Many years
The idea for the project is dated for about ten years before its release date, although its script only went to its final stages three years prior to the release.
Emotion
Udo Kier, one of the film's actors, cried at a premiere for the first time in his 50-year career during the great day of 'Bacurau' in Cannes. He said it wasn't just for the movie itself, but for the whole experience of recording it.
Tribute
At one point, the villagers names are cited out loud. Between them there's a Marielle, a Marisa Letícia and a João Pedro Teixeira, an homage to the real life people that are cemented in Brazil's history.
John o João
The name of the school in the movie is "João Carpinteiro", which can be translated as "John Carpenter". Kleber Mendonça Filho is fan of the american director.
Bird name
Bacurau is the portuguese name for nightjar, iconic bird with nocturnal habits, very common in southeast Brazil.
Almost in the Ceremony of the Oscars
Brazil's runner-up for the 'Best Foreign Language Film' category at the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020; the official submission went to 'La vida invisible de Eurídice Gusmão' (2019). Both were deemed as favorites by audiences and critics.
