Back Roads

Harley Altmyer (Alex Pettyfer, 'I Am Number Four', 'Magic Mike') is given custody of his three younger sisters in a rural Pennsylvanian town after his mother, Bonnie Altmyer (Juliette Lewis, 'Osage Country', 'Sacred Lies'), is imprisoned for killing their abusive father. Harley gives up his college education in favour of working a string of dead-end jobs intended to pay the bills and put food on the table for his family, including his 16-year-old rebellious and sexually disturbed sister, Amber (Nicola Peltz, 'Bates Motel', 'Our House'), who has employed a particularly destructive method of grieving. Harley suffers from panic attacks and sees a kindly psychologist in an attempt to work through his trauma all whilst trying to conceal his own pain from his sisters.

Struggling with his past, Harley begins to fall for Callie Mercer (Jennifer Morrison, 'Once Upon A Time', 'House'), an older and married woman that Harley works with. When his romantic encounters with her trigger memories of his childhood abuse, however, secrets from his past threaten to reveal themselves.

'Back Roads' is a crime drama that also serves as leading actor Alex Pettyfer's directorial debut. It was adapted for screen by Adrian Line and Tawni O'Dell, and is based on O'Dell's novel of the same name.
