The movie follows Will Keane (Gere) a middle-aged womanizer restaurateur who feels attracted by Charlotte Fielding (Rider), a client on his restaurant the day she is celebrating her 22nd birthday. He soon discovers she has a grave heart illness and doctors have only given her a year to live. However, Will falls in love with Charlotte.
Will also discovers he has an illegitimate daughter he had never met which irrupts in his life, married and pregnant. An infidelity makes Charlotte stay away from Will, but he insists to get back together when she is given only a few days to live. Will then uses all his influences and money to try to find a doctor able to save Charlotte's life.
'Autumn in New York' was destroyed by critics and Richard Gere and Winona Ryder nominated to a Razzie Award for worst onscreen couple. However, the film was a modest commercial success, grossing approximately double its budget.
