Plot
'At Eternity's Gate' tells the story of Van Gogh when he was living in Arlés y Ausvers-sur-Oise, France in 1886. In his time there, he is treated good by some of the neighbors but not so much by others. Madame Ginoux, the owner of the restaurant of the village, gives him an accounting book that the painter filled with drawings. But his constant mood-swings cause that most villagers become afraid of him. His best friend, Paul Gaugain, who loves him, ends up running away from him because of his overwhelming personality and his brother, Theo, is not able to sell any of the painter work, despite his unconditional support for his brother. During this period of time, Van Gogh painted the master pieces that made him worldwide famous.
The movie is directed by Julian Schabel ('Le scaphandre et le papillon'). The cast is formed by Willem Dafoe, Oscar Isaac, Rupert Friend, Mads Mikkelsen and Emmanuelle Seigner, among others.

Trivia
Poor French
Since neither Willem Dafoe nor Julian Schnabel spoke fluent French it was decided that the majority of the dialogue would be in English. The first scene is in French, to establish the setting and tone. After that, the dialogue only shifts to French in scenes where Vincent feels threatened. Van Gogh himself spoke poor French, and was often mocked for it.
Behind the Poster
The main theatrical poster and title is a photo shot of one of van Goghs last self portraits, this particular one was done after he sliced off a piece of his ear.
Marvel Reunion
Three of the actors in the film have also portrayed Marvel Comics villains on the big screen. Willem Dafoe portrayed the Green Goblin, Oscar Isaac has played Apocalypse and Mads Mikkelsen has portrayed Kaecilius.
