Plot

The movie tells the story of Artemis Fowl, a twelve year old kid from Ireland who is a supernatural criminal mastermind. The boy lives in a world which has kept some secrets for years. One of them is the existence of fairies, a world which they were forced to keep in secret and under ground due to the greed and the uncontrollable appetite that humans have. Fowls has to kidnap a fairy called Holly Short to ask for a rescue that allows him to save his father and restore the fortune of his family. Once he gets what he wants, Artemis will start an adventure which could make him fight against a maleficent fairy called Opal Koboi.

It is an adaptation of the first two novels of ?Artemis Fowl?, the science-fiction and fantasy literary series written by Eoin Colfer. The saga was famously claimed by the young readers. Disney is in charge of adapting the books to the big screen thanks to the prolific actor and director Kenneth Branagh (?Cinderella?, ?All Is True?) as a director of the film. It is starred by Ferdia Shaw, Judi Dench (?Murder on the Orient Express?, ?Victoria & Abdul?), Josh Gad (?Marshall?, ?The Beauty and the Beast?), Nikesh Patel (?Four Weddings and a Funeral?, ?Indian Summers?) and Hong Chau ('Homecoming', 'Watchmen'), among others.

Trivia

Changed characteristic

In his books, Eoin Colfer describes the character of Butler, Artemis Fowl's bodyguard and servant, as Eurasian. This is a heritage that helps him blend in wherever Artemis' adventures take them. But, despite this, director Kenneth Branaugh says he always envisioned black actor Nonso Anozie, who worked with him on Disney's live action Cinderella, in the part, and cast him as such.

Based on a book series

Based on Eoin Colfer's book series of the same name.

Previous collaboration

Director Sir Kenneth Branagh and Nonso Anozie collaborated on Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014) and Cinderella (2015).
