Plot
'Are You Proud?' is a documentary aiming to shed a light on one of the most widespread celebrations of LGBTQI+ identity around the world: Pride. The documentary examines how the earliest pride celebrations were born out of a desire to resist the violence and repression faced by a community that, in many areas of the world and sections of society, is still vilified even today. Through using both archive footage from decades past and more recent film of a transgender march in Brighton and of the Latinx vigils that following the 2016 Orlando gay club shooting, 'Are You Proud?' considers not only how far the movement has come, but also how far it still has to go. It sheds a light on the experiences of people living in countries were being part of the LGBTQI+ community is still a criminal offense, considers exclusionary dialogue happening within the community itself, and questions whether Pride marginalises black people and intersectionality. From the Gay Liberation Front to the terror following the AIDs virus to the continuing fight for representation today, 'Are You Proud?' explores the enduring significance and political importance of Pride celebrations today.
'Pride' is directed by Ashley Joiner, whose other works include 'Pride' and 'Gravitation in C Minor'.
