Plot
'Animal' is a 2023 Hindi action drama film directed, edited and co-written by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. The film is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Pranay Reddy Vanga, Krishan Kumar and Murad Khetani under T-Series Films, Bhadrakali Pictures and Cine1 Studios. It stars Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role with Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna and Triptii Dimri in pivotal roles. In the film, Ranvijay Singh learns of an attempted murder on his father and sets out on a path of revenge and destruction.
The film was officially announced in January 2021. Principal photography began in April 2022 and concluded in April 2023, with photography by Amit Roy. The film's soundtrack album was composed by Pritam, JAM8, Vishal Mishra, Jaani, Manan Bhardwaj, Shreyas Puranik, Ashim Kemson and Harshavardhan Rameshwar. It is one of the longest Indian films ever made, with a running time of 201 minutes. It was initially scheduled for release in August 2023, but was postponed due to post-production work.
It was released in theaters on December 1, 2023 in standard and IMAX formats. It received mixed reviews from critics with praise for the cast's performances (particularly those of Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol), technical aspects, music, cinematography, direction, action sequences and emotional weight. However, the film's running time, graphic violence, and screenwriting were criticized, sparking controversy due to its depiction of toxic masculinity.
The film broke several box office records for a Hindi film, both domestically and internationally. It has grossed Rs 917.82 crore (US$110 million) worldwide, becoming the third highest-grossing Indian film of 2023, the fifth highest-grossing Hindi film, the eighth highest-grossing Indian film box office and the highest-grossing A-rated Indian film, and the highest grosser of Ranbir Kapoor's career. At the 69th Filmfare Awards, the film received 19 nominations and won five top awards, including Best Actor for Ranbir Kapoor.
The plot follows Ranvijay "Vijay" Singh , who learns of the attempted murder of his father and embarks on a journey of revenge and justice. From his expulsion from the family home to his return as a determined man, the story follows his fight against his family's enemies and his search for answers.
