All We Imagine as Light

The routine of nurse Prabha in Mumbai is disrupted when she receives a completely unexpected gift from her husband, from whom she is currently distant. Meanwhile, Anu, the young woman she shares an apartment with, tries in vain to find a place in the city where she can have some privacy with her boyfriend. A trip to a coastal town allows them to find a space for their desires to manifest.

Starring three great women, 'All We Imagine as Light' is a universal portrait of female friendship and the experience of creating a community far from what we consider home. Prabha, Anu, and Parvaty represent three different generations living their reality in a complex political, social, and cultural context in very different ways.

The perspective of its director Payal Kapadia allows the viewer to feel empathy for the characters they are getting to know, even though their reality has nothing to do with that of the protagonists. 'All We Imagine as Light' becomes her first feature film, and with it, she has made history. This is the first time an Indian film has been awarded in the Official Selection at Cannes, as well as the first time an Indian woman director competes at the Festival, and the first time in thirty years that the country is represented.
