Plot
'All Quiet on the Western Front' follows the experience of a young German soldier, Paul Baümer, who enlists in the German army along with his friends Albert and Müller. The feeling of patriotism quickly dissipates when they must face the harsh realities of being on the front line. Paul will begin to doubt everything he believed to be true, questioning who the enemy really is as his conception of right and wrong cracks. With the Armistice about to be signed, young Paul must fight till the end to satisfy the orders of the higher in command, who wish to end the war with a German military offensive.
It is an adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's book of the same title, inspired by his own experiences as a German soldier in the First World War. It is also the third adaptation of the same story, the two previous films with the same title being: the work of Lewis Milestone, winner of the Oscar for Best Picture in 1930, and the lesser-known version by Delbert Mann released in 1979.
The war drama, which would be the biggest-budgeted film in Netflix's history, has been nominated by Germany to represent them in the Best International Film category at the 2023 Academy Awards.
