Plot
Freely inspired by the book that judge Pierre de Lancre wrote about the time he spent touring the French Basque Country, interrogating hundreds of people and condemning hundreds of women to the stake accused of alleged acts of witchcraft, 'Akelarre' was born from the sentiment of injustice that its director, Pablo Agüero, had before the treatment that fiction has always given of the witch hunt, taking into account the image imposed by the inquisition.
The story takes place in the Basque Country in 1609 when the men of the area have gone to sea. Young Ana participates in a party in the forest with other girls from the village when Judge Rostegui, a man commissioned by the King to purify the region of the bad arts, arrests them and accuses them of witchcraft. The judge then decides to do what is necessary for them to confess what they know about the coven, that is, the magical ceremony during which the Devil supposedly initiates his servants and mates with them.
A feminist look at a black period in the history of the world against women but which, even based on stories from the XXI century, retains many resonances with the current present. Euskadi, with local actresses who speak Basque and even using some locations where certain episodes of real history actually happened.
