Plot
A stranger rides into the town of San Miguel where he is told of a long-standing family feud by the town's innkeeper, Silvanito. The feud is in between the Rojo family and that of the town's sheriff, the Baxters. Seeing a selfish opportunity to make money, the stranger decides to play the two families against one another, by befriending both sides and selling information to either on the sly. The feud eventually leads to the kidnapping of Antonio, the sheriff's son by the Rojos, in order to complicate matters, the strangers frees Antonio but in the process purposely makes it look like the Baxters freed him. This in turn, leads the Rojos to retaliate against the Baxters by setting fire to their home and killing the Sheriff and his son.

Trivia
Origintal title
Originally called 'The Magnificent Stranger', the title wasn't changed to "A Fistful of Dollars" until almost three days before the movie premiered in theaters.
Spaghetti Western
This has been described as the first "spaghetti western", but when this film was made, there had already been about 25 such westerns produced in Italy. This was, however, the first to receive a major international release.
Clint Eastwood
Clint Eastwood helped in creating his character's distinctive visual style. He bought the black jeans from a sport shop on Hollywood Boulevard, the hat came from a Santa Monica wardrobe firm and the trademark black cigars came from a Beverly Hills store.
